Analysis

  1. Find the school you want to compare. In this case, we are using Yorba Linda High School.
  2. How did YLHS compare to the rest of the division? We were 17th place out of 39 overall.
  3. However, let's look at our Auxiliary score. We were actually higher than some of the other schools above us, even those who participated in the Nov 23 championships! At the time, we found this very unusual as the weather did not cooperate with us during our show specifically (extremely windy), and thus we had great difficulty executing our performance.
  4. On the other hand, our Percussion score appears to be average, or slightly lower than average, compared to the schools above and below us. If the schools were ranked by Percussion, YLHS would appear to have a lower placement.
  1. Let's look more closely at the Auxiliary category. You will notice that there generally appears to be a positive correlation between overall score and auxiliary score, though it is a weaker correlation than Percussion/Overall.
  2. Remove Hoover HS from the analysis. Their score is 0.00 because they likely had no auxiliary group.
  3. Notice how Palisades has an unusually high score of 77.50 despite being in 26th place, while Oak Park in 8th place has a score of only 70.00.
  4. This is because, in the marching band world, the color guard or auxiliary group works separately from the band. The band director does not instruct the color guard directly; instead, there is usually one or more coaches. This also explains why the Percussion correlation is stronger, as the percussion is often under the band director and/or music instructors.
